I Knew a Woman
By Theodore Roethke
I knew a woman, lovely in her bones,
When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them;
Ah, when she moved, she moved more ways than one:
The shapes a bright container can contain!
Of her choice virtues only gods should speak,
Or English poets who grew up on Greek
(I'd have them sing in chorus, cheek to cheek.)
How well her wishes went! She stroked my chin,
She taught me Turn, and Counter-turn, and stand;
She taught me Touch, that undulant white skin:
I nibbled meekly from her proffered hand;
She was the sickle; I, poor I, the rake,
Coming behind her for her pretty sake
(But what prodigious mowing did we make.)
Love likes a gander, and adores a goose:
Her full lips pursed, the errant note to seize;
She played it quick, she played it light and loose;
My eyes, they dazzled at her flowing knees;
Her several parts could keep a pure repose,
Or one hip quiver with a mobile nose
(She moved in circles, and those circles moved.)
I'm martyr to a motion not my own;
What's freedom for? To know eternity.
I swear she cast a shadow white as stone.
But who would count eternity in days?
These old bones live to learn her wanton ways:
(I measure time by how a body sways.)
Do you read the Sunday paper? Which one(s)?
Yes, the Seattle Times (starting with the comics, then the Pacific Northwest magazine, then the ads, then the local news, life, and entertainment sections) and the New York Times (starting with the Book Review and Style section and often not getting much farther than that). Even though I can get news on-line, I still like reading the print editions. And we get the Seattle P-I as a daily paper Monday - Saturday and spend 15 - 20 minutes each morning with it.

What are your Superbowl plans? What's your prediction and why?

At 3 pm, approximately 1/2 an hour prior to the game starting here, we are going grocery shopping at Uwajimaya, in the hopes it won't be so completely packed. I predict I will find a wonderful chunk of maguro tuna and several packages of delightful custard hum bao (which we have been eating for breakfast). Why? Because last weekend, when the fish counter was 4 deep, I spotted a fabulous deep red slab of fish and we got the last package of custard buns. Surely, they will have restocked.
How do you pass the time during a flight? What do you bring in your carry-on?
I typically sleep - there is something about being in a plane that just knocks me right out. Probably the reduced pressure; I'm too sensitive to altitude shifts. If I can stay awake, I might read or listen to my iPod mini, or play Electroplankton on my DS. I just got a pair of sound-cancelling headphones, and they make a world of difference.
My computer is always in my carryon, but I never get it out on a plane - too cramped as it is back in the cheap seats!
